The term Industry 5.0 is a concept complementary to Industry 4.0 which is relatively new and still under development. The term was coined by the European Commission to describe the next phase of industrial development, which is characterized by a greater focus on human-centered technology, and a sustainable, ethical, and socially responsible business.

Industry 5.0, which has also been called the “Future of Manufacturing”, is expected to integrate human skills into the manufacturing process and provide a more efficient and streamlined production process by harnessing human intelligence and creativity.

Below are three key pillars of Industry 5.0.

1) Human-centric: Industry 5.0 aims to create a symbiotic relationship between humans and machines, with both working together to achieve better outcomes. This approach prioritizes the role of humans in the manufacturing process, rather than replacing them with automation.

2) Sustainability: Industry 5.0 emphasizes sustainable manufacturing practices that are environmentally friendly. This includes reducing waste, using renewable resources, and minimizing the energy required to produce goods.

3) Resilient: The term “resilience” refers to the necessity to improve industrial production’s robustness, equipping it better against interruptions and ensuring that it can offer and sustain key infrastructure during the crisis. It’s important for organizations to engage in planning exercises that account for potential disruptions across the value chain, from the factory floor to the supplier network, to transportation channels, to regulatory and geopolitical changes that can promote the achievement of societal goals. High resilience can be attained when humans and robots operate together.

Industry 5.0 brings us some opportunities such as better employment, customization, improved human efficiency, employee safety, customer satisfaction, human-machine interaction, Quality Service, higher-value job, better planning and management, and human creativity

Industry 5.0 reintroduces the human element into manufacturing, allowing for collaborative production that combines the creativity and flexibility of human workers with the power of cyber-physical systems like collaborative robots. This combination of smart machines, cognitive computing, cloud computing, and human ingenuity will lead to true “mass personalization” and more agile production. This reintroduction of humans to manufacturing adds a soul to the process and enables a more advanced and empowered workforce.

Industry 5.0 brings significant challenges and demands for new and contemporary learning and education approaches to meet the needs of the workforce. The educational systems have to evolve and enable people to work alongside machines and robots perfectly. It also demands reskilling for the incumbent workforce. Thus, managers should think about reskilling programs for their employees.
